Five Possible Positive Outcomes
In focusing on this whole situation in terms of an opportunity rather than a problem, and drawing on suggestions from people writing in, we've indentified five positive outcomes that we hope will come out of this:
1. Increased understanding of the need for communities to live more sustainably and that growing some of your own food is an easy way to start
2. Increased public awareness and discussion of the issue of tenants being able to grow their own food where they live in a time of rising energy costs
3. A legal statement that can be added to future lease agreements granting tenants the right to grow their own food (Any legal eagles out there prepared to have a go at this?)
4. A list of renters prefering to lease houses with food gardens and a list of landlords happy to have tenants create or maintain food gardens. This could be a useful aid for tenants negotiating edible-gardening possibilities with landlords
5. A positive resolution of our particular situation with documentation of what happened as a resource for others
If you have any ideas about how we can better achieve these outcomes, or if you would like to be on the lists mentioned in #4, please leave a comment to this post or fire us an email.
Best,
The Thomas Street Crew
